Our proposal distinguished itself by embedding its layout within the steep site’s natural surrounding and organizing school as a “cascading” hierarchy of spaces.
Though a central pedestrian path was challenging to establish, considering the site’s topography, the practice organized the school’s main circulation around a series of “green squares” and urban terraces. Intended for both, public and student use, these social areas directly connect to the school’s major programs, including the auditorium, library, pool and sports center.
In addition to providing spectacular views of the surrounding nature and Bosporus, the cascading levels ensure optimum natural light for all teaching areas.
The design area of the school complex is on a hill in Beykoz, which is confronting the Bosporus of Istanbul. The general layout of the proposal draws cascading levels that are ending with the perceptional view of Bosporus and the nature. The continuity of the terrain with the terraces and open spaces leads the students to link with the surrounding territory.
The social activities for the students on the green square are also established with the links between the auditorium, the library, the pool and the sport center by their foyer and cafes. This platform and the continuity of cascading levels allow citizens and students to have a social gathering space with nature. In other words, the proposal intends to achieve a sharing space that supports the everyday life of urban dwellers and their children with social and cultural activities/facilities/uses, and a human-centered urban green terraces.
The slope of the hill is very challenging that the main pedestrian circulation axes in the site and the pathways with the landscape leads the form of the building and the hierarchy of spaces. The design allows a pedestrian path that connects the slope of the hill with the starting point on the below that allows the inner and outer spaces flow into each other with the end of the top of the hill.
The contrast between the nature and the manmade structure creates the differentiation of perceptional view and this differentiation will be distorted with the green terraces, courtyards and gardens. These spaces and voids also give the overall spatial organization with the two storey classrooms solids. All the classrooms are organized to have optimum natural light with the direction of eastern and southern.
