Gerber Architekten
Gerber Architekten successful design competition entry for the Olaya Metro Station provides a unique design that combines an elevated public garden extending over the entire area of the station and cascade down to street level, while adhering to the technical and functional interchange demands of a key transfer station for the city’s new transportation system.
Sustainable development (notably urban public transport and coordinated links with city-regional transport networks) is of great importance for the future viability of Riyadh and therefore the construction of this metro network is expected to be completed in the next four years. For the three main metro stations three parallel competitions were held by the High Commission for the Development of Arriyadh. As one of these stations, the Olaya Metro Station is situated on one of Riyadh’s most important traffic junctions; between Olaya Street, King Fahad Road and the King Abdullah Freeway. The 200 metre long by 100 metre wide site offers the opportunity to add a further landmark to this dynamic urban axis; continuing the sequence of the King Fahad National Library along with the Faisaliyah and Kingdom Towers.
The undulating shape of the roof, inspired by the beauty of the sand dunes in the deserts of Saudi Arabia, is tree planted and publicly accessible. The concept blends elements of lush green gardens with the undulations of desert dunes. The gardens will become a new attraction in the centre of Riyadh with their natural interplay of architecture and landscape, creating an oasis of communication for the people of the capital.
On entering the station, an open day-lit space presents itself to the visitor and reveals below the two crossing metro lines of this transportation hub. This view allows direct visual connection for passengers, ensuring easy orientation downwards towards the 100 metre long platforms for Metro Lines 1 and 2, where trains arrive and depart enclosed in glass tubes. The glazed facades, skylights and fabric membrane to the underside of the roof create an engaging, naturally lit atmosphere. Stairs, lifts and escalators interconnect all levels, providing immediate access and short travel distances from all entrances to the train platforms, the retail concourse, the public roof gardens and the public parking facilities located underneath the plaza.
The topography of the roof leads pedestrians directly to the dune park from King Fahad Road and an adjacent hotel from the west and to the main entrance on Olaya Street from the east. In front of the main entry plaza, a large cantilevered canopy covers the generous drop-off zone and links together public and private transportation. A bus terminal, taxi station and four storey underground car park (with parking provision for 750 private cars) demonstrated the concept of flexible mobility.
Olaya Metro Station offers the city of Riyadh the amenities of a major transportation hub together with public gardens. A symbiosis is formed between the two: the dune park benefiting from accessibility by public transportation, while the Olaya Metro Station gains a significant destination in the form of the gardens. This public space provides a spacious landscape with graceful paved areas all naturally shaded by palm trees combined with water features, picnic areas, seating amphitheatres, wireless internet coverage and a terraced terrain for sitting or strolling.
For the first time an urban city space will be accessible by public transport; combined with the landscape architecture (also by Gerber Architekten), the overall concept of the Olaya Metro Station mediates between traditional and modern elements and creates an inclusive urban public space.
