The extensive refurbishment of this 162,000 sq ft building comprises: atrium, reception, two light wells, one floor of CAT A office space, toilets and lifts, as well as some external refurbishment work.
The overhaul of this iconic building in the heart of London’s Midtown has created an entirely new identity for the structure’s new offices.
A striking Linda Morey-Smith designed entrance and reception with full-height, eight-storey atrium enhances the feeling of space and draws people into the heart of the building. Morey Smith has taken a modern twist on the classic art deco design, incorporating bronze on the original entrance and using lighting to create an atmospheric space where workers can meet clients but also relax. A dramatic bespoke artwork chandelier by Stewart Haygarth commissioned by Artsource creates a focus at the base of the atrium, with a new sweeping helical staircase beyond. The installation comprises over 6,000 recycled spectacle lenses.
Enhancements to the existing lightwells have created new usable space and a dynamic outlook for the building’s users. Materials have been carefully selected to create a link to the to art deco design of the building especially in the initial reception area, which opens up to a contemporary light airy atrium giving connectivity, light and spaciousness to all floors. Leather and coloured fabric have been used on bespoke furniture enticing people to use the seating areas and evoking the glamour and elegance of the buildings past. Hand wrapped leather has been used on the handrails of the stairwells and striking stone with hints of blue and gold have been used in the bathrooms.
The Cat A office space includes all new services and a linear plank ceiling offering flexibility and a contemporary aesthetic.
Although not listed the building is in a conservation area so the upgrade to the exterior frontage onto historic Aldwych has been respectful. Limited alterations include new entrance doors and accent lighting to improve street presence.
MoreySmith’s design has created a new lease of life for Aldwych House. This striking transformation of such an iconic address will greatly increase rental potential for owners Rowan Asset Management.
“After a series of poor 80s refurbishments, we have once again revealed the beauty of the original building, while adding significant new design features that have transformed its appeal. It is now a place that draws people in and invites them to linger” Andrew McCann – Creative Director, MoreySmith
