The social housing in Wayerfeld, is located in a narrow lot on the outskirts of St.Veit/Glan. The elongated shape of the building is partially due to this limited urban location and partly to the north-south orientation of the dwellings. The building contains 26 residences and an underground garage with the cellars. It is distributed through a system of half-open galleries and staircases, which offer large semi-private spaces at the entrance of the individual residences. This protected area is available for many types of uses, and allow a high level of common activities and social communication among the inhabitants. The construction, realized with very low costs, is based on the idea to have a building with two different facades: the south front is characterized by wooden coated balconies and the north one by translucent colored polycarbonate panels. The central body contains the dwellings and it real remains thus trapped between these two external layers. Walking around the neighborhood, the change of materials and facades produce a quite pleasant and surprising effect, that the inhabitants particularly appreciated also by giving funny nicknames to their a little bit curious building.
