The 12 hectar former Danish Crown abattoirs in Nr. Sundby are being transformed into a modern, mixed-use urban area, tied together by a pedestrian zone, squares and green parks. C. F. Møller Architects is responsible for the masterplan, and design guidelines, focusing on the connecting central urban ‘rambla’ as the main axis linking the city and harbour front.
The pedestrian street is designed around a small stream, springing from the surplus of groundwater, and running through the street in an open rill to the firth. Along the way, the stream runs through mossy pools, and a larger cor-ten steel mirror-pool. Surfaces and pavings are of honey-coloured concrete and slate, and are lit by integrated LED-lighting sources.
