Around the village of Empel a ring of new constructed houses are realized. The house Mes is part of this ring, nearby the center of the village.
A long, rough wall defines the plot. The dark bricks are curved and awry. It reminds us of the traditional village and creates in addition an own inner world. In this isolation of the universal space, framed in a tight façade of zinc, is the space for the inhabitants. Here they work, communicate, eat, rest and bath.
In the centre the living space connect to all other spaces. Because of the large vide this space also connects the two floors. A staircase is placed in the vide, made of steel plates supported by a U-profile. De staircase ends on a gallery which is so wide that it also functions as a library. Beside it lies the working space. From here you can overlook the rough brick wall, to the polder and the village.
The living and workings spaces open up to the sun. A large overhang and wooden blinds protect against the strong summer sun. The spatial structure of this house in an suburban area of a village, is grafted on the romantic image of an old fabric shed, a simple structure and understandable. An open area of working, living, eating and sleeping, strongly focused on the garden. It is screened by an enclosed area where all serving facilities are.
The workplace as a house, no modern high-tech, but a nostalgic, physical desire. A living machine with all comforts in a raw form. The house can only function with the presence en steering force of the inhabitants. The materials which are used support this desire of industrial constructions: a zinc facade, wooden blinds, unfinished concrete floors, bare steel, inside walls of concrete stones, wooden window frames. The house becomes a natural background for their lives.
