“Modern and luxury flats” : this was the claim of the agency involved in selling the apartments in the new building in Viale Argonne in Milan.
For the times, the late thirties, the architecture of this dwelling was on vanguard: “…wide rooms with large windows…oak floor with acoustic insulation”; as the plants equipment: “radiator’s functional arrangement under windows almost in all rooms…warm water available in all bathrooms and kitchens…collective radio antenna…intercoms”.
The following works of restauration, designed only for parting the spaces, had made the apartment, dark and unfriendly, unsuitable for the needs of a today’s family.
The design started up by rethinking the layout as a sequence of spaces linked to a unique fluent circuit, to allow to the light coming from the windows, which face toward four different orientations, to penetrate without obstacles up to the house’s core, and to allow everyone to see at least one window from everywhere in the apartment.
The designer reached the purpose arranging a unique and fluent promenade around a central core hosting a bathroom and the laundry.
The southern light which enters from the livingroom’s windows reaches the entrance, touching the oblique profile and the recesses of the volume, moving from brightness to obscurity. In the same way the northern light coming from the kitchen illuminates the other side of the volume.
The centrale volume opposes a wide false ceiling, about 20 smq large, required by the clients as storage. The false ceiling could had disturbed the sculptural nature of the volume. So an interruption, containing the lighting system of the corridor, has been put between these two elements. A wooden reticular beam has been installed in order to sustain the load-bearing of the false ceiling. This beam, made by wooden components with iron tie rods and directly anchorated to the building’s structure, is the most elaborate structural element.
The intervention restores the traditional distinction between living and sleeping area, by a general rearrangement which allocates bedrooms on south, the best orientation for who wants naturally wake up at sunrise.
A sliding door brings to bedroom’s access: the attention is drawn on the blue coverings of the main bathroom and light becomes colour.
This is the main feature of every restroom where ceramic coverings, used in different size and colours (10 x 10 cm, glossy red for the laundry; 5 x 20 cm and 20 x 40 cm, opaque blue avio and ultramarine for the main bathroom; 5 x 40 cm and 5 x 5 cm, opaque yellowish – green and olive green for the guest bathroom), are designed according to Fibonacci’s series, giving them rhythm and focusing the attention on points of main interest.
The neutral aspect of the oak wood that runs along this stream of spaces gives them a warm and homogenous feeling.
Already used in the original project, the oak wood is bring back up in floorings and inner windows and doors, to uniform the ambiance.
The doors reach ceiling, as plain panels interrupting the walls. The sliding ones are provided with double handle: the lower one for the children.
The passage from house’s service area – kitchen, guest bathroom and laundry – to the living area is underlined by a lifting of the floor, made to match technical necessities. Circulation turns out to be fluent thanks to the ramp between the entrance and the kitchen, which allows to everyone the accessibility to the entire habitation; and thanks to connection between the kitchen and the livingroom.
The central volume is treated with lime plaster, which contrasts the white surface of the other walls and gives to it a vibrant and materic aspect, according to its emotional nature.
