Highbury Grove School and Samuel Rhodes School are the first secondary schools to be completed as part of Islington’s ‘Building schools For The Future’ programme. Set on the site of the existing Highbury Grove School, the project was constructed over a two year period so that the old school remained operational throughout, avoiding wasteful temporary accommodation and decant costs. Throughout the design process frequent discussions were held with the local authority urban master planner with regard to sensitive massing and siting. The fact that the school site borders two conservation areas also needed careful consideration. The principle was set early on in the process that the key elements of the schools should be viewed as ‘pavilions’ facing onto a new central ‘park’. A number of key entrance elements forming a ‘civic head’ to the design at the Highbury Grove and Highbury New Park junction. The selection of materials was of equal importance to the considerations of massing, height, orientation and maximising use of daylight. As part of the scheme runs parallel with Highbury Grove Road, a ‘smart formal suit’ was proposed in a metallic material with panels scaled to suit the historic surroundings. The garden/ park elevations were developed with a more informal suit of sustainable timber offering soft, warm and friendly material qualities on this sheltered side of the site.

At the outset of the competitive design process, the school’s strategy for improvement was made clear. Highbury Grove was already an outstandingly effective school and attainment continues to push the boundaries of the national average. The brief was to enable effective use of the existing site to provide an inspirational learning environment designed as an enjoyable place with calm settings for supportive learning. Through discussion with Highbury Grove we developed a scheme which wraps nine core faculty bases around a new ‘fresh air’ garden at the centre of the site. Internally, the activities are linked via a sociable and covered day-lit street. The school brief required us to design for a rich range of curriculum subjects including inspirational spaces for art (classroom as artist’s studio and gallery), meeting spaces for international business courses and cultural and theatre activities. An interesting external landscape with user-friendly settings for an exciting landscape to facilitate settings for track events, ball games and informal garden spaces was also created.

The proposed co-location of the Samuel Rhodes SEN School onto the Highbury Grove school site presented exciting opportunities as well as challenges. The school heads initially briefed us to develop the schools as physically separate entities but as we tested options through the dialogue process it became apparent that it would be mutually beneficial to establish a closer relationship and a physical connection so that spaces and specialism’s could be shared. The shared dining space forges a strong connection between the two schools at ground level and the sports hall is the connecting element at first floor level.

The building is principally constructed from an insitu concrete frame which contributes significantly through its exposure throughout the building in reducing the building’s energy consumption due to its thermal mass. The large span sports and performance halls have been constructed from steel. The green / brown flat roofs have, amongst other ingredients, layers of recycled concrete crushed from the demolished old school to encourage bio-diversity whilst providing an appealing outlook from the Highbury Grove staff ‘penthouse’ perched on the roof of the building.
