….therefore the sandou 4th rd. and the lingnan rd. will be extended on the site. the road extensions will be connected by the new “seashore drive” which is parallel to the existing seashore rd. – but as close to the sea as possible (20m harbour facility zone).

….by lifting up the U-shaped building a public accessible terrace for observing harbour activities occurs. this enables people to gain the coast line as close as possible without disturbing (or being disturbed by) harbour activities like warehousing or stevedoring. the elevated view-point makes the view even more impressive.

thus makes the whole cruise terminal to an exciting public-outdoor-space which opens the coastline to everyone!

the lifted terrace presents a new alternative connection for bikers and pedestrians. They could move up the new cruise terminal in order to enjoy the view on the harbour.

the lifted waterfront terrace is designed as an intensively greened public garden. this enables a continuous green belt as an intensively used recreation area alongside the waterfront of Kaohsiung.

due to its intensively greened rooftop the new cruise terminal serves green-building aspects, circulation and traffic

Circulation and traffic

1. initially the site is split in a departure and a arrival zone. a basic pattern which is easy to understand and which is easy to handle.

2. two interconnected circulation loops overlap the departure and the arrival zone

a) passenger loop passengers will pass the U-shaped building from a departure to the arrival zone

b) traffic loop motorized traffic will access the site by lingnan rd. after that an on-site traffic circle connects the different kinds of parking spaces for cars (kiss & ride), taxies, buses, etc. visitors exit the traffic loop by sandou 4th rd.

3. besides the various entrances to the different parts of the building on ground floor level there are two alternative entrances for public access to the conference centre

ground floor: departure and arrival area

basically the whole ground floor level is divided in a departure and an arrival area. this basic pattern is easy to understand and it is easy to handle:

neither the passenger nor the motorized traffic circulations ever cross. this leads to optimized traffic-, passenger- and luggage procedures.

1st floor: terminal

at this level the separated areas of departure and arrival will be linked by the multifunctional area. this area connects public functions like shopping or temporary exhibition spaces with the secured areas as departure halls and waiting lounges. alongside the waterfront the concourse distributes arriving from departing visitors. the triangular shaped spaces formed from the ramps leading to arrival and to departure areas constitute one of the inner-space highlights of cruise terminals architecture. due to the lifted cruise terminal passengers can access ships very conveniently because they are already on a higher level (7 meters).

2nd floor: conference / service centre lobby

this level hosts the conference centre and the port service centre lobby, both areas are accessible for the public – either from (the outdoor spaces of ) the ground floor level or via the multifunctional space to the conference centre. conference centre and lobby can be connected (or separated) by a multifunctional space in the centre of both areas. thus makes both areas very flexible in use and organisation.

3rd floor: port service centre / traffic management

this level is organized by a circular system which leads from staff orientated areas like dining hall, archives, clinics, hairdressers, etc. to the offices. in the centre of the waterfront the vessel traffic management facilities are located. this guarantees a perfect overview over all activities in the harbour area. a generous indoor green zone – which is designed like a green house – is located within the office spaces. this provides indoor recreation for employees, improves atmosphere and air quality, and guarantees a higher level of work-life-balance.

these green-areas are spread all over the office spaces!

4th floor: offices

in the 4th level offices are situated. the building structure enables multi flexible floor plans – every kind of work environment can be realized (single offices, double offices, open-plan offices, etc.)

there are also various numbers of meeting and staff rooms possible.

the floor plan offers two indoor green zones for staff recreation and work-life balance.

5th floor: offices

the fifth floor hosts mainly offices. the building structure enables various kinds of office shapes and is thereby highly flexible. this level also offers access to an indoor green zone.

pattern facade

the outer area of the facade consists of a patterned surface.

the density of the perforation is determined by:

a) the kind of use of the areas behind (e.g. offices, waiting lounges, archives)

b) the desired degree of view

c) the solar radiation (north/south)

Urban master plan

the basic structure of the cruise terminal can easily be extended to parcel B and C.

therefore the waterfront terrace will be stretches over the neighbourhood plots.

by folding and stretching the structural shell a tree-like footprint appears.

on the edges of this structure high rise buildings are placed. this originates an exciting structure of various perspectives.

the waterfront terrace is extended in the same height like the lifted cruise terminal building to parcel B and C.

the structure will be folded. new harbour and town perspectives appear. at the same time the distance alongside the harbour is increased. at some points the structure will be stretched to the edges of the plots. a tree-like footprint appears.

on the edges of the structure high rise building will be placed in order to gain the maximum density.

there are ramps and stairs leading from ground floor to the elevated level of the waterfront terrace.

the extended waterfront terrace will be covered with green areas like the cruise terminal.

the whole terrace becomes a harbour park in a height of approx. 18m.

Urban master plan: flexible building structure

in order to allow a wide range of future utilization, the basic structure of the buildings on parcel B and C are based on a very flexible 22m-wide building. this enables any kind of future developments like apartments, hotels, offices, mixed use, etc. because of the implementation of lots of bars / restaurants / cafes the waterfront terrace becomes an important part of city life – even at night. the spectacular view on the harbour AND to the city makes this places highly attractive for everyone!
