以下是设计事务所提供的项目简介:

The Peninsula Residence is an extensive rebuild. The original home was a generic combination of styles. Although the property has 180 feet of lake access and a dramatic waterfront view, the existing home did little to connect with the site. Through the use of glass, steel, detailing and light, Bercy Chen Studio has adaptively reinvented the home, radically changing its role in the landscape and its relationship with the lake and mountain beyond.

The design saved the ‘bones’ and completely reorganized the layout from within. The challenge was to create a sensitive and innovative design from the pre-existing condition. The architec¬tural elements were conceived as minimalist installation art, tuned to interact with nature.

New Brazilian Masaranduba hardwood cladding and a copper roof were used on the exterior. The materials and the refined detailing of the roof give the volume clean lines and a bold pres¬ence. A triangular pool extends out to the boathouse- a visual extension of the lake reflecting the image of Mount Bonnell.

The house opens to the lake, but also to the harsh Western sun. An extensive shading strategy was employed while maintaining the waterfront views. The public wing of the house has double paned insulated glass protected by eight-foot overhangs. Automated external fabric shades per¬mit light and views while blocking 85% of heat gain. The Peninsula house uses Icynene® insula¬tion which results in up to 50% energy savings. A series of green roofs reduce energy consump¬tion and increase the permeability of the site. The solarium green roof is a vegetable garden for the family. It also serves as a test bed for residential green roofs in sub-tropical climates.

The former attic is a space where the inventive adaptation of the original structure created an evocative opportunity. Inspired by Borromini, the daughter’ s room is an eclipse, inscribed with a 360-degree image of Yosemite National Park. The son’s room is a childhood wonderworld of nooks, crannies and a secret passageway. A climbing wall makes the most of the shifting angles of roof and wall. The space between these rooms is a shared living space wrapped in the Brazilian hardwood. Red acrylic panels line the inside of the dormers and are lit from be¬hind. The niche creates an ideal space for reading or sleeping.

Inspired by the desire for a panorama of the lake, like a Japanese scroll, the view unfolds to the furthest extents of the ground floor and implies the continuation of view outside the frame. The layout opens and allows the play of natural light. The reflecting pond transmits indirect light deep into the house. The interior design utilizes reflective and translucent surfaces: acrylic panels, etched glass, copper and mirrors, combined with white plaster walls and ceilings. These walls capture the poetic play of rippling water, a subtle acknowledgment of the lakeside location.

The owner is a patent attorney who has always been interested in the process of invention. Therefore every detail is investigated, redesigned and often hand fabricated.
