The design for the Yongdu Hill Park gestures to the cultural history of the Busan Observation Tower. We intend to preserve the existing tower and its historical significance. The proposed urban design comprises of two axes: The vertical axis highlights the towers central location to the surrounding urban landscape; the horizontal axis integrates the tower and the urban surroundings. The central plaza, which acts as a stage for the historic monuments, takes the form of an oval plane and descends towards a sweeping entrance to the main tower. This plaza forms an urban amphitheater that focuses the visitors’ attention on the tower design, provides shelter and facilitates diverse events. The helical pathways ascending to the top of the tower comment upon its formal features, at times diverging from, but always reinforcing, the tower’s original character. Functioning both practically and as a framing device, these pathways integrate the structural and aesthetic features of the historic landmark. The journey from the city, through the plaza, up the tower, and back again reaching its apex at the existing sky-deck level takes the visitor through spaces that transform both themselves and their surroundings.
