Starhill Tea Salon

这是 design spirits 完成的一个茶主题沙龙的室内设计,位于马来西亚。该沙龙座落在吉隆坡的一个著名的购物中心里,临近是一些知名的奢侈品牌店面。

Starhill Tea Salon is located at ground floor in Starhill Gallery Shopping Mall along Bukit Bintang which is the Golden Triangle of Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia. The Tea Salon is surrounded with international luxurious brands like Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior, Bottega Veneta, and Gucci, to name a few in the prestigious retail space.

It took 2 years in completing this project since the first meeting was carried out on Feb 2010. I had been spending time on many obstacles from store perimeter around luxurious retail tenant coordination and design during on-site condition, changes of budget convenience on many occasions, or changes in total quantity of tea can be integrated.

Malaysia was once colonized by British, however a place serving authentic tea is nowhere. Therefore, it is essential to create the first tea salons in Kuala Lumpur, the heart of the city in Kuala Lumpur. We started in seeking for suitable Graphic Designer for this project. Concentration on various aspects including uniform designs, packaging designs, menu and tableware selection, which also involving the printing production and graphic designing.

Flexibility of the furniture is important based on the site condition which is located in a prestigious shopping mall. All the furniture designed to be divided into few parts in factory and is moved parts by parts and build it up at site. The column with colorful tea can display is also built up part by part, it can be attached and removed easily. A space with flexibility is achievable with the presence of flexible furniture. Surprisingly, the construction was held without setting hoarding, it was going on at night time only because retail shops are operating in day time. Tea Salon itself was opened for business once the water pipes were laid. Meanwhile, the construction was still going on area by area at night time for around six months. Considering the client of this project is also the owner of the shopping mall, and hence possibility of changes in many areas including new space planning has to be considered. Thus, Tea Salon has a flexible lease line area whereby its area can be adjusted and adopted partially anytime in future. Tea Salon is an organic shape with a natural flowing and curving appearance similar to its curvy furniture. It applied to the patterns on the ceiling and carpets too that enable adjustment to be made easily.

A classic and authentic Tea Salon is requested by client, yet I had doubted in term of the life span of the Tea Salon if Classical is the concept. It is crucial to create a sustainable space that is profit-making. So, I came up with a combination of Classic and Contemporary expression by using lighting effect. The idea of no wall or partition in this design is to create non-boundaries visual using the lighting reflection from cabinet side panels, hanging borders, and hanging shelve to bring out the illumination border line in the space.

Besides the challenge of combining both Classic and Contemporary, we had selected Oriental style for the tea cans shape instead of European style because the Tea Salon is wholly-owned by Malaysia Company. We faced shortage of tea cans due to cost-control problem which the total amount of display tea cans had been reduced. We took this chance to challenge contemporary expression by creating graphic of tea cans and printed out. We used it together with lighting inside cabinets to create illumination shadow of the tea cans.
