To build for science is a fiction. Who can tell us, what happens in science during the following years? What kind of skin can manifest the discoveries of next decades? In 20th century our knowledge of science helped us to achieve very rapid improvements in industries. These improvements took place so quickly that we failed to consider the impacts of these changes. Yet in 21st century having had experienced painful damages of blind industrialization, new sciences seek solutions of a sustainable modern life. There is a gap between mystical, sometimes even unearthly science, and our everyday life. People do not dare to approach to science, scientists do not care about people. Only the bases are the same: the air, the water, our earth with her terrain, rivers, fauna and us – people.

The elements are everlasting, and our concept is based on them.

The surrounding area itself is a result of urban science. However, the final outcome of the sophisticated plans is an inhuman environment. Original elements of terrain disappeared; they were substituted by artificial objects – wide roads, on rectangular plots, cubistic blocks.

People strive to maintain traditions, searching the roots, the nature and everything, that still connects them to the basic elements. Our planned object is a bridge to this direction. A city block, where the youth get familiar with environmental friendly life in secondary school, university students study green life, scientists explore new energy efficient solutions and visitors learn about sustainability, has to reflect these attempts and promote it.

Thus our proposal is an imitation of a natural landscape where:

The towers of CFPOS as “Museum Rocks” try to compete with height and solidness of neighborhood blocks and they harmonize the Arsenija Carnojevica Boulevard’s front line.

The university buildings as “The Hill “create a peaceful and green inner block, yet have a formal face toward towers of block 38.

“The Island” is the center and meeting point of complex and students, scientists and visitors can exchange Ideas for sustainable life.

Groups of wind turbines and solar panels as “The Forest” provide enough energy for yearly consumption of the block.

Water as “The Lake “complements this ecosystem and is a reminder of the history of the area.

Cars are to disappear immediately upon arrival to the block in the multi-level above-ground-parkings or under the hill. Visitors can enjoy a walk through the block from “museum square” to the “university square” on the “lake side path” in a car-free zone.

Future extensions of the university and science institutes are foreseen by adding new wings/fingers to the hill and building new “science rocks” on top of the hill. An internal court lit by skylights on “The Hill” is the circulation spine of the university and it ends at the “university gate” next to “The Island”.

“The Rock’s” entrance is beside “The Lake”, adjutant to “The Island”. 120 cars can park in an automated multi-storey tower beside the new service road. This indicates that all visitors arriving by bus/tourist bus, on foot, by bike or by car in a democratic way will experience the same approaching scenario: a short walk on “museum path” toward “The Lake” in a shallow “valley” and will find the lobby tower and conference tower at the “museum square”.

The Centre for Promotion of Science opens from this square with lobby including public cafeteria. The Conference Centre is linked to the lobby, but it has its own entrance too. The temporary separation of the two units can be easily solved, but the service rooms are common. The museum part is divided according to the program on three public levels. Permanent exhibition spaces are linked directly to the lobby, temporary exposition room and some services are placed in the basement. Visitors can climb up in two rocks onto some exposition platforms and viewpoints too.

On first floor there is the Science Club and the restaurant – which is served from the ground floor logistic-area. On this floor you can have a direct access to out-door science park, which is visually integrated to the hills, but separated from public areas by landscape elements. Administration got place on 2nd floor. Logistic-service area is along the service-road no.2, with one input loading dock and an optional access directly to the storage area.

The structure of the buildings follows the basic concept. According to sustainable approach, main elements are made of local materials – gravel + water + some imported cement – i.e. reinforced concrete, which remain indoor naked. The height requires special truss skeleton, but it fits to the innovative atmosphere of whole composition.

Floors should be covered by different concrete based finishings – like terrazzo or smoothened cement floor. External skin of rocks is made GFRC, which can imitate any kind of stone, but it is light and strong. Rest of skin is green roof or glass.
