Before starting any project an architect must find an answers to so many questions. In this project we were concerned with a few following fundamental questions: how to insert the Pavilion in the environmental context, how to make easy its fruition, which consequences it can involve on the surrounding nature, how to make it attractive, how much time it can withstand in the time?

And these are just some of the questions.

In the case of the Almada another important question was added: how would have been welcomed by the suburban sociocultural environment, as a change in orderly and organized sense of its territory?

The main idea of the project has been the search of an environmental retraining together with the social-cultural reality. Park Aventura was a space partly abandonated, but nevertheless enjoyed as a meeting space, testimony of the difficulties of an urban outskirts.

The commitee (il Comune di Lisbona) required the insertion of a multi-functional pavilion in the landscape planning of the Park that would mark the principal access to it.

The pavilion is developed in an unique and linear volume, with an essential structure, programmatically signalled by heights and voids that conjugate the inside and the outside as a continuum.

Pavilion at Park Aventura in Almada can be defined as volume created by the network of shaddows. Flexible and foldable, the pavilion contains one central space, freestanding and multifuncional, able to host small events, shows and conferences. It is equipped with a structure defined by doors, designed as a support for exhibitions and projections.

The wooden pavilion misteriously stand in openess of a green grass and bark flakes, toghether with scattered pine trees whose thin appearance challenges its horisontality. The pavilion reveal itself to the visitor of the park, who while walking can’t avoid seeing the semi-transparent structure, where full is void, where inside is outside.

The pavilion was exclusively realized in ecocompatible material. One unique material used – wood. Outside rough, not treated, rugged, plain and full. It is transformed into the surface more and more defined and refined.

The bands are made from local pine – OSB, treated in autoclave, left raw to limit visually their environmental impact in the external prospectus.

In the inside, drawn by a plot of lights and shades that are projected on a dark chestnut tree floor, the surfaces are treated in way to create the feeling of a comfort. The dark and wrinkled floor is one continius surface. Completely opaque internal elements put the focus on the functionality of the reception room, the sanitation and the technical areas for the maintenance of the park.

Inside and Outside overlap, Pinewood and Pavilion merge,

The pavilion, where inside and outside melt themselves, today lives as a meeting place for the visitors of the park, not only by families and old people, but also and above all by the young people of Almada, the same that initially have “refused” the pavilion, as organizative superstructure of the “their space”…
