The objective in this project has been to establish an approach to the landscape of the Woodland Cemetery in Enskede south of Stockholm, a World Heritage site designed by Gunnar Asplund and Sigurd Lewerentz, and the built fabric of the single-family housing of Pungpinan.

This project lies across from the east entrance to the Woodland Cemetery. The vegetation surrounding the burial grounds, its towering tree trunks and mossy ground, with little undergrowth obstructing the views through the forest, continues on the other side of the road. To the back the site is closed off by rocky outcrops.

The fourteen houses form an arc around a shared outdoor space, sheltered from view and passing traffic. Seen from the open landscape of the cemetery, the scale of the project is subtly monumental, distinct. At the same time, the circular form blends in among the trees and does not dominate the view.

The landscape design, with components such as stone, bark, gravel, pine and birch trees, ferns etc. also works with the character of the site, a way to establish a connection with the Woodland Cemetery.

The details and materials used in the building have been chosen to articulate each individual unit rather than subordinating them to the whole scheme. This is clear from the street and the entrance. The second floor of each home has a large window that protrudes above the roofline. There’s a well-framed entrance court defined by natural-toned horizontal siding. The flat dark-brown colour of the rest of the building also helps visually blend the overall form with the surrounding forest, shifting our experience of it from direct and obvious to something everyday and intimate. The form first becomes clear on the back side, where it embraces, surrounding and defining a shared space, a community.

The lower level forms a kind of tunnel between front and rear—a space between two glass facades. As in the Sparsamheten development, it may be seen as a composite of a series of sub-spaces. It starts out at the street with the entrance court. After the kitchen and living area, the rear patio leads to a garden path. The balance between public and private shifts from one zone to the next: the character becomes progressively more private as you move from the street side toward the garden. The upper level is a completely private realm, with a small but useful multipurpose room with extra headroom and three bedrooms, a bathroom against the façade and a walk-through closet.
